A collaboration with dancers Omer Backley Astrachan, Charmaine Seet and Kirsty Kiloh . Composer and sound engineer Ilia Bezroukov. Dramaturg Dominic Bock. Choreographer and concept Geraldine Balcazar.
Presented at Bangarra Dance Theatre, Sydney by Imagine Platform, 2015.
Researcher and Lecturer Le-Tuyen Nguyen (Teaching Fellow from the Australian National University School of Music) and I collaborated to recreate the dance of Cleo De Merode performed in the 1900’s Paris World Exposition. We looked at her portrait photographs to pick up gestures and her demeanour.
Early in his research Le-Tuyen discovered an original traditional Vietnamese musical score played live at the Exposition to a Cambodian Dance performed by French Ballerina Cleo De Merode.
A contemporary interpretation of the Indochina Dance has been performed and choreographed by myself and accompanied by live Vietnamese Traditional Musicians from the Golden Bamboo Ensemble. We aim to take Cleo’s contemporary performance back to Paris.
Presented in Sydney 2013. World Festival of Vietnamese Traditional Music 2015 & 2016.
